SWANCC has won a Silver in the Wilder Kent Awards

SWANCC has won a Silver
in the Wilder Kent Awards
South Willesborough and Newtown Community
Council (SWANCC) is proud to announce that
it has been awarded the Silver Award under the
Wilder Kent Framework, recognising our strong
commitment to enhancing biodiversity and
creating thriving natural spaces for wildlife and
our community.
The Wilder Kent Framework, led by Kent Wildlife Trust,
supports the work of schools, community groups,
businesses, as well as villages, towns and cities in helping to
create a Wilder Kent. The framework considers three areas
of activity: protecting and restoring nature; sustainability and
carbon reduction; and actions to engage with nature.
All of these areas were evidenced in the application and
help to contribute towards improving the environment and
creating a Wilder Kent.
Achieving Silver status reflects significant progress in
delivering meaningful environmental improvements across
the SWAN area. To date well over a mile of land has been
improved with planting. Also in true SWAN Community Spirit,
9.3% of the Electorate has been involved either directly
planting or engaging with environmental activities.
This achievement was only possible because of the
tremendous contribution made by so many residents who
supported planting and environmental activities across
the area.
SWANCC would sincerely like to thank all members of the
SWANCC Planting and Biodiversity Working Group, which has
spearheaded planting and environmental activities.
SWANCC would also like to take this opportunity to
particularly thank Jacky Godden and Jackie Willis for
their endless planting of spring bulbs and their infectious
determination, which has included so many residents in
this activity, which continues to thrive and brighten our
community.
Looking Ahead
SWANCC has prioritised enhancing biodiversity and creating
thriving natural spaces for wildlife and our community. This
was following overwhelming feedback that this is a top
priority for residents in the public consultation for the SWAN
Community Plan. Achieving Silver is an important milestone
because it affirms that the environmental actions undertaken
are positively supporting the goals for environmental
improvement across the SWAN area.
SWANCC will receive feedback on its actions to date, along
with guidance for continued improvement from Wilder Kent.
This will help the Council build on this success and maintain
its work effectively, continuing to make SWAN a more wildlifefriendly
place to live.
SWANCC would like to thank everyone who has supported
its environmental initiatives so far. If you would like to get
involved in future projects, please keep an eye on the website
at www.southwillesboroughnewtown-cc.gov.uk and local
noticeboards for upcoming opportunities.

“Two people were handed into the care of SECAmb paramedics, suffering the effects of smoke inhalation. Kent Police also attended.

“The cause of the fire is not yet known.”

SWANCC are grateful that no one was seriously hurt and we extend our deepest concern to the residents whose homes were affected by the fire.

Press Release SWAN SALUTE TO THE 1940s

Press Release SWAN SALUTE TO THE 1940S FINAL

SOUTH WILLESBOROUGH AND NEWTOWN IGNITES THE SPIRIT OF THE 1940s WITH AN UNFORGETTABLE VE 80 / VJ DAY CELEBRATION!

South Willesborough and Newtown Community Council (SWANCC) is thrilled to announce the roaring success of its spectacular SWAN SALUTE TO THE 1940s – VE 80 / VJ Day Commemoration, held on Saturday 5th July 2025. The event transformed Newtown Green into a living, breathing time capsule of wartime Britain – brimming with colour, sound, remembrance, and joy.

Taking centre stage was an absolutely awe-inspiring, full-size Spitfire, proudly displayed on the green. Crowds were left speechless as they stood in the shadow of this legendary fighter plane – a powerful symbol of British courage and ingenuity that captivated hearts and sparked imaginations throughout the day.

As the green buzzed with excitement, visitors were transported back to the 1940s with vintage military vehicles, authentic air raid shelters, and an immersive ‘Home Front’ exhibition. Enthralling wartime re-enactments brought history to life, while the sound of live 1940s music from acclaimed London and Brighton performers filled the air, setting toes tapping and spirits soaring.

A highlight of the day came when Sir Winston Churchill himself – flanked by his officers – arrived to rapturous applause. A spontaneous Guard of Honour formed as he delivered a rousing performance that stirred the crowd into a unified celebration of resilience and victory. Union Flags waved high – over 500 in the hands of families, veterans, and children – as voices rang out in song and dance in true Blitz spirit.

The event was graced by a host of distinguished guests including Deputy Lord Lieutenant Sir George Jessel  Bt. DL, MP Sojan Joseph, Mayor Cllr Lyn Suddards, and Ashford Military Champion Cllr Peter Feacey. Each offered moving tributes to the enduring strength of the wartime generation and the unbreakable spirit of community.

The Town Crier’s haunting bagpipes marked a solemn moment of reflection, as the Mayor of Ashford lit the Lamp of Peace and delivered a heartfelt speech. A collective silence followed, shimmering with reverence and gratitude.

Chair of the SWAN Community Council, Cllr Sue Mullan, said:

“The SWAN Salute to the 1940s brought our community together in a truly unforgettable way. The turnout was phenomenal, and the atmosphere was electric. We raised a powerful and heartfelt Salute to the remarkable generation of the 1940s. SWANCC is deeply grateful to every volunteer, performer, and special guest who helped create such a meaningful and magical day.”

In a dazzling finale, the Cinque Port Lindy Hoppers lit up the green with a sensational performance, sending the crowd home smiling and uplifted – the echoes of music and laughter lingering long after.

With wonderful  attendance and an outpouring of local pride – many residents dressed in stunning period attire – the SWAN Salute was a vibrant tribute not only to the past, but to the enduring power of remembrance and unity.

SWAN Community Council extends heartfelt thanks to all who attended, contributed, and celebrated, ensuring the legacy of VE and VJ Day continues to inspire future generations in South Willesborough and Newtown.

Coronation Fruit Trees – Volunteer Update 🌳

Coronation Fruit Trees – Volunteer Update 🌳

SWANCC are delighted that everyone is so pleased with the New Fruit Trees at Frogs Island.

This Spring, 49 fruit trees were planted by our fantastic team of volunteers as part of the Coronation Living Heritage Fund project.

To support their growth, a waterpoint has been installed, and the trees are being watered with 2 gallons per tree each week during dry weather throughout the Summer. Pruning has also been carried out to shape the trees for long-term health.

We’ve received some concerns that the trees look dry or wilted – but please rest assured:
➡️ The trees are being regularly watered
➡️ The wilting appearance is actually due to aphid damage, particularly affecting the cherry trees by the seats.
Aphids can make leaves curl or look stressed, but it’s a common and manageable issue in young trees. The cherries have already had two treatments with soapy water, (to avoid the use of chemicals) and care is ongoing.

Sadly, 3 trees have been damaged by vandalism, including cut tree stakes and removed wire netting. These trees have been pruned to support their recovery, and protective supports are being replaced. They are also receiving additional care and watering.

The area around the trees is being regularly mown and the brush cutting for the overgrowth is scheduled for the next fortnight.

All the Coronation trees are regularly monitored and reported to Ashford Borough Council, as part of our agreement with the Living Heritage Fund.

Thank you to everyone who has supported this project — and to those who’ve raised concerns. If you’d like to get involved or learn more about the Planting and Biodiversity Working Group, please contact the SWAN Office either by email clerk@southwillesboroughnewtown-cc.gov.uk or telephone 01233 528933. We’re all working toward the same goal: healthy trees for our community’s future 🌱
